To recruit or not to recruit

15th March 2011

by Dawn Guinness

In these austere times businesses, especially for our small employers, are finding it difficult to make the decision to recruit new employees.

The reasons most companies look at employing new staff are:

  • Employees moving on – new jobs, redundancy, personal reasons; and
  • Expansion.

Many companies, in the current climate may feel that employees’ leaving is an ideal time to cut the wages budget and to increase the bank balance. For many this works and business goes on as usual.

For other organisations the need to recruit due to expansion is the only way forward – albeit rather worrying. Taking on new staff is stressful. You need to get it right. Do you have the workload to sustain new staff? Do you have the time to recruit? Will you get the right candidate?

Being efficient when recruiting is a must and doing it in-house is not always the most cost effective way. Look at your recruitment function. Is using your own website and the recruitment consultants cost effective to get the candidates you want? How much will you have to pay to publish your job adverts on media sites? Working with a reputable agency can be beneficial – you get the knowledge that your staffing issues are being dealt with in a professional manner without the hassle.
